New Business Venture

So, as you may know, I really want to make art my living. Lately, however, the jobs have been none and far between.

So I'm thinking about starting a sort of business venture that does not require me to get hired by an outside company.

    Paper Dolls...

    Now stay with me.

My main love artwise is drawing my own, and other peoples characters. It's my thing, it's what I do. But it takes a while and if I'm not inspired by the character it's really tough. But I still want people to have a picture of their character in my art style.

So I'm thinking of working up a set(several sets actually) of genre-specific papers dolls that one can print out, cut out, and customize. It can be purchased as a high-res PDF file.

Each set will contain class/setting specific clothing, armor, weapons, hair styles, and much more.

I'll probably market them through RPGnow at first. Maybe charge 5 bucks per pack.

I also plan on including information on how to contact me for possible custome, one-of-a-kind dolls based on your character.

I'm really psyched about this and am curious to hear your opinions.

Hmmm. This is interesting. I don't know that I'd buy them, personally- but it's one of those crazy things that you may just not know until you try.

I think you'd have better luck selling them if they were already printed.

I'd suggest using a place that does really nice on demand print work- perhaps http://www.lulu.com/

You can also use them as a marketplace.

Another thought- perhaps http://www.etsy.com ? I've seen stranger things....

The problem with print on demand is that the Dolls really need to be printed a specific way. Cardstock for the bodies, regular paper for the clothes and such. I don't think Lulu does that.

Also not sure if the cost would be prohibitive, but I'll take a look at it.

Id' planned on using RPGnow as a marketplace for starters. They sell nothing but game-related PDFs and they're well known.

But no worries, I plan on doing quite a bit of research before I go full ahead.

Well, if you're sticking to PDFs to start with (probably not a bad plan to test the waters), then your initial investment should be fairly low- I think it's definitely worth giving a try!

You may have to talk to the LuLu people, but they're one of the better creative printers I know so I thought I'd throw it out there.
