"Those bastards," the investigator sighed sharply. "They got another one."

He glowered at the small crowd that had gathered, the voyeurs who always seemed to show up when there was a body. They backed up a little, but still scrabbled to get a decent view. He walked over to take a closer look.

The body was laid out, back broken, blood spattered on the victim's coat. The investigator heard a keening sob from the other side.

"Who could have done this?" the victim's wife asked. "Why? My Marty never hurt a soul!"

The investigator grimaced. "Get her out of here," he instructed one of his lieutenants. "She shouldn't see this." No one should, he thought darkly.

The Medical Examinator was on all fours, checking out the mangled body. "What have we got?"

"Male, middle aged... I'd say he's been dead for a few hours." He shivered. "Death was instantaenous, as far as I can tell."

The investigator nodded. "What about the device? Would it have been suicide?"

"I doubt it. It's pretty complicated, even for Marty."

He wrinkled his nose. "What's that smell?"

The ME held something up. "He was holding it when he died."

He sniffed. "Peanutbutter?" The ME nodded. "What the hell was he doing with peanutbutter?"

"There's no good reason. I think it gives us probable cause," the ME sounded hesitant. "This was premeditated, boss. Deliberate. No doubt about it."

The investigator narrowed his eyes. "Somebody did this to him... on purpose?" He felt hot with anger and frustration.

The ME stood up, taking a step back from the victim. "I haven't worked the physics of it all out yet, but I think this device was designed just for this. To kill Marty."

"No, Paul. This wasn't designed to kill Marty. It was designed to kill us," He growled. "This thing is a mouse trap."
